In the 70's Lay’s work was influenced by the Earth Works movement and Japanese gardens. Works were concerned with a visual discourse between nature and geometry, concurrently structured and intuitive. A place- an introspective space where there is an interplay of nature, architecture and the psyche. One of these architectural landscape works was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
